FAQ
What is the difference between HSN and SAC?
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) classifies GOODS. SAC (Service Accounting Code) classifies SERVICES. Both follow a 4-to-8-digit hierarchy; both are used in GST invoices.
When is HSN/SAC mandatory on an invoice?
Under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, HSN/SAC is required on tax invoices based on the taxpayer's aggregate turnover. The notified digit-length increased over GST reform iterations — small taxpayers may use 4 digits; larger taxpayers must use 6 or 8. Check the current CBIC notification for your turnover band.
Are the GST rates shown here authoritative?
No. We show "typical" rates as a starter reference; the rate for any specific product depends on the actual CBIC rate notification in force at the time. Cross-check with CBIC before relying on a rate for an invoice.
Why is the starter set so small?
The full HSN database has ~12,000 entries. We bundled ~80 of the most common categories to keep the page fast and the rates reviewable. A full-dataset version is planned.
Do you store my searches?
No. This lookup runs entirely in your browser. We never see your queries.
